Overview
The first half of this trip belongs to Petra. We drive down the old King's Highway from Amman, stopping at the mosaic map in Madaba, Mount Nebo and the Crusader castle at Kerak, and reach Wadi Musa for two nights at the gate of Petra. The next morning you walk through the Siq to the Treasury, the Grail temple of The Last Crusade, and on through the city of tombs to the Monastery, about 800 steps up. That evening you walk the Siq again by candlelight for Petra by Night.
The second half belongs to Wadi Rum. After a morning at Little Petra we drive south into the desert, change to jeeps driven by Bedouin guides from Rum village, and spend the afternoon among the valleys used for Lawrence of Arabia, The Martian, Rogue One and Dune. You sleep in a desert camp run by a Bedouin family, watch the stars, and in the morning ride out to the red sand before the drive back to Amman. Omar Nawafleh leads the whole trip.

Pace 3 of 5. One long walking day in Petra, 6 to 9 miles on sand, uneven stone and steps, with about 800 steps up to the Monastery for those who want them. In Wadi Rum you ride in open jeeps on bumpy sand tracks and climb a dune or two. Two days include four to five hours in the van.
Itinerary
An air-conditioned van with a professional Jordanian driver on the highways, and open 4x4 jeeps with Bedouin drivers inside Wadi Rum. Ticketed times shift with the season; your final timetable comes two weeks before departure.

Route map
We travel south from Amman on the slow, scenic King's Highway, spend two nights at Petra and one in the Wadi Rum desert, and return north on the faster Desert Highway.
On screen
The productions behind the stops on this tour, where they filmed and what you see there today.
| Film or series | Year | Location | What you see today |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade | 1989 | Al-Khazneh, the Treasury, Petra | The facade of the Grail temple; the chamber behind it is closed, and we see it by day and by candlelight. |
| Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade | 1989 | The Siq, Petra | The gorge leading to the temple; we walk its three quarters of a mile twice. |
| Lawrence of Arabia | 1962 | Wadi Rum | The desert valleys around Rum village, seen from the Bedouin jeeps on our afternoon drive. |
| The Martian | 2015 | Wadi Rum | The red sand valleys that played Mars; open desert where the jeeps go. |
| Rogue One: A Star Wars Story | 2016 | Wadi Rum | The desert of the moon Jedha; no sets remain, only the rock and sand. |
| Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker | 2019 | Wadi Rum | The planet Pasaana; our Bedouin drivers point out the valleys used. |
| Aladdin | 2019 | Wadi Rum | The desert scenes of the remake, in the same protected area. |
| Dune | 2021 | Wadi Rum | Arrakis on screen; open valleys inside the reserve, seen on the jeep drives. |
Filming spots change over time: storefronts get new owners, sets are rebuilt and some interiors were shot on stages elsewhere, so your tour leader tells you on the day what is still there.

What the days are really like, so there are no surprises.
Moderate, 3 of 5. One long walking day in Petra, 6 to 9 miles on sand, uneven stone and steps, with about 800 steps up to the Monastery for those who want them.
Filming, events and closures can move a stop or close an interior on the day. Your leader swaps in another location nearby and tells you why.
Museums, studio tours and open businesses you enter as a visitor. Working businesses that ask for quiet, and every private home, are seen from the public street or not at all.
Flights are not included. Plan to land in Amman by mid afternoon on day 1 and to fly home from Amman after lunch on the last day.
Tour leader, Jordan
Born in Wadi Musa, the town at the gate of Petra, where he still lives with his family. He has been a licensed Jordanian guide for twelve years and has walked the steps up to the Monastery in every month of the year.
Practical information
Your travel pack, with ticket times and hotel addresses, arrives two weeks before departure. Weather, airports and the best months are on the Jordan page.
Spring and autumn days run 70 to 85 F, but the desert night can drop to the 40s F. Bring a warm layer and a hat for the sun.
Light, loose clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and walking shoes with good grip for Petra's sand and polished stone steps.
The Jordanian dinar is the currency. Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants; carry small notes for tea stalls, tips and the camp.
Bring a passport valid for at least six months from arrival with two blank pages. We need your passport details early to buy your Jordan Pass.
The camp has electricity in the evening and limited phone signal. Charge your phone and camera in Wadi Musa and bring a small flashlight.
Tour FAQ
Yes, by way of the Jordan Pass. We buy it in your name before you travel; it waives the visa fee on arrival because you stay more than three nights, and it covers two days of entry to Petra.
So that our evening in Petra falls on a night when Petra by Night runs. The show runs on several evenings a week, Sunday to Thursday, and we plan the dates around it.
Yes. The steps are optional. Omar arranges a meeting point in the old city center, and you can spend the time at the museum, the Great Temple or a cafe.
Yes, within reason. The tents are private, with real beds, bedding and their own bathroom. It is still a camp, so expect simple comforts and a very quiet night.
No. The productions removed everything when they finished, as the reserve requires. The valleys and rocks you see in the films are what we drive through.
Yes. The single supplement is $420 for the five nights, and many of our Jordan travelers come alone. Meals are shared and the group is small.
