Los Angeles · 5 days
Five days in Los Angeles with a local tour leader: the Warner Bros. and Paramount studio tours, Hollywood Boulevard early in the morning, Griffith Observatory at sunset, the Bradbury Building, Angels Flight and Union Station.
From $2,290 per person sharing
Overview
The studios are where films are made, but much of what we remember was shot on the city's streets. This tour does both. You get two full studio tours, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood in Burbank and the Paramount Pictures Studio Tour on Melrose Avenue, with tickets booked for you. Between them you see the public places that keep appearing on screen, from the Chinese Theatre to the waiting room of Union Station.
Lena Kowalski, our Los Angeles tour leader, plans every day around the traffic and the light. Hollywood Boulevard is best before 9 in the morning, Downtown on a weekday morning, Griffith Observatory at sunset. We stay four nights in one central Hollywood hotel, so you unpack once, and there is a free afternoon for a museum or the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

Pace 2 of 5. Two to three miles on foot on the walking days, on flat city pavements with a few stairs at Griffith Observatory and the Bradbury Building. The studio tours involve standing and short walks between stages, with a tram or cart for the longer distances.
Itinerary
A 14-seat Mercedes Sprinter van with a professional driver, plus one ride on the Metro B Line to Downtown with your tour leader. Ticketed times shift with the season; your final timetable comes two weeks before departure.

Route map
You stay in Hollywood all four nights. Each day goes out in a different direction: Burbank and Griffith Park to the north and east, Downtown and Bunker Hill to the southeast, Melrose to the south.
On screen
The productions behind the stops on this tour, where they filmed and what you see there today.
| Film or series | Year | Location | What you see today |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rebel Without a Cause | 1955 | Griffith Observatory | A free public observatory; we go inside and out onto the terrace, and a bust of James Dean stands on the west lawn. |
| La La Land | 2016 | Angels Flight, Bunker Hill | The funicular still runs for a small fare, and we ride it on the Downtown day. |
| Blade Runner | 1982 | The Bradbury Building | A working office building; visitors may stand in the lobby and climb to the first landing. |
| The Artist | 2011 | The Bradbury Building | The same iron staircases, seen from the lobby on our Downtown walk. |
| The Dark Knight Rises | 2012 | Union Station | A busy working railroad station; we walk through the waiting room and the old ticket hall. |
| Friends | 1994 | Stage 48, Warner Bros. lot, Burbank | The Central Perk set stands inside, at the end of the public studio tour. |
| Once Upon a Time in Hollywood | 2019 | Hollywood Boulevard | A public street with the Walk of Fame and the Chinese Theatre, walked early in the morning. |
Filming spots change over time: storefronts get new owners, sets are rebuilt and some interiors were shot on stages elsewhere, so your tour leader tells you on the day what is still there.

Before you book
What the days are really like, so there are no surprises.
Easy, 2 of 5. Two to three miles on foot on the walking days, on flat city pavements with a few stairs at Griffith Observatory and the Bradbury Building.
Filming, events and closures can move a stop or close an interior on the day. Your leader swaps in another location nearby and tells you why.
Museums, studio tours and open businesses you enter as a visitor. Working businesses that ask for quiet, and every private home, are seen from the public street or not at all.
Flights are not included. Plan to land in Hollywood by mid afternoon on day 1 and to fly home from Hollywood after lunch on the last day.

Practical information
Your travel pack, with ticket times and hotel addresses, arrives two weeks before departure. Weather, airports and the best months are on the Los Angeles page.
Spring and fall are 70 to 80 F by day. The coast is cooler and often gray until noon in June. Evenings on the Griffith Observatory terrace can drop to the high 50s F.
Both studios ask for a photo ID at the gate and limit photos on some stages. Large bags are not allowed on the Warner Bros. tour, so bring a small day bag.
Comfortable walking shoes, layers for the evening and a hat. The studio lots are large and the backlot streets get hot in the afternoon.
If you land in the morning, the hotel holds your bags and you can walk to the Walk of Fame. Extra nights before the tour are easy to add.
Cards are accepted almost everywhere. A little cash helps for street parking tips, shoe-shine stands and the Angels Flight fare if you ride it twice.
Tour FAQ
Yes, on their public tours. We book tickets for the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood and the Paramount Pictures Studio Tour. The studios run the tours with their own guides; we have no special arrangement with either studio.
It happens on studio lots now and then, but it is never part of the plan. If you see someone working, let them work.
No. We do not stop at private homes. Our tour is about the places where films were made, almost all of them public.
Less than you might fear. Apart from the airport transfers, no drive is longer than about 30 minutes. We avoid the freeways at rush hour wherever we can.
Yes. Meals are shared, the group is small, and the single supplement is $480 for four nights.
Yes, on an extra day before or after the tour. We can book the ticket and a transfer. It is a theme park more than a studio tour, so it is not part of this trip.
