Ten days from Auckland to Queenstown with a tour leader from Wellington: the Hobbiton Movie Set, the volcanoes of Tongariro, the woods of Mount Victoria, Wētā Workshop, Rivendell at Kaitoke and the mountains of Isengard near Glenorchy.
From $6,290 per person sharing
Overview
This trip follows the films down the length of New Zealand. On the North Island you see the Shire as it still stands at the Hobbiton Movie Set, the volcanic slopes of Tongariro that played Mordor, with Mount Doom on the skyline, and the waterfall where Gollum caught his fish. In Wellington, the city where the films were made, you walk the woods on Mount Victoria where filming began in 1999, take a guided tour at Wētā Workshop and spend a morning in the forest at Kaitoke, the setting of Rivendell.
Then we fly south. From a base in Queenstown for three nights you drive along Lake Wakatipu to Glenorchy and the Dart River flats under the Isengard mountains, and spend a slower day in the gold-rush town of Arrowtown beside the river used for the Ford of Bruinen. Kiri Walsh leads the whole tour. The group is never more than 14, so there is time at every stop to line up your own frame.

Pace 3 of 5. Daily walks of 1 to 4 miles on good tracks, some with steady climbs, plus the stairs and slopes of the Hobbiton set. Several days include two to four hours in the van. The optional Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 12-mile mountain walk of 7 to 8 hours for fit hikers only; everyone else takes the shorter walk.
Itinerary
A 14-seat Mercedes Sprinter van with a professional driver on the road days, plus a direct domestic flight from Wellington to Queenstown with a checked bag. Ticketed times shift with the season; your final timetable comes two weeks before departure.

| The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey | 2012 | Hobbiton Movie Set, Matamata | The same 44 hobbit holes, the mill and the Green Dragon Inn, where the tour ends with a drink. |
| The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring | 2001 | Mount Victoria, Wellington | A public town park of pine woods; we walk the paths where the hobbits hid from a Black Rider. |
| The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring | 2001 | Kaitoke Regional Park, Upper Hutt | The setting of Rivendell; the sets are gone, and a replica elvish archway marks the spot. |
| The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring | 2001 | Whakapapa ski field, Mount Ruapehu | The Mordor slopes of the prologue battle; bare volcanic ground in summer, reached by road. |
| The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers | 2002 | Tawhai Falls, Tongariro National Park | Gollum's Forbidden Pool, a short walk from the road near Whakapapa Village. |
| The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King | 2003 | Mount Ngauruhoe, Tongariro National Park | Mount Doom in the long shots; seen from the trails, as the summit is sacred and not climbed. |
| The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers | 2002 | Dart River valley near Glenorchy | The mountains behind Isengard, seen from the river flats near the Dart River bridge. |
Filming spots change over time: storefronts get new owners, sets are rebuilt and some interiors were shot on stages elsewhere, so your tour leader tells you on the day what is still there.

Before you book
What the days are really like, so there are no surprises.
Moderate, 3 of 5. Daily walks of 1 to 4 miles on good tracks, some with steady climbs, plus the stairs and slopes of the Hobbiton set.
Filming, events and closures can move a stop or close an interior on the day. Your leader swaps in another location nearby and tells you why.
Museums, studio tours and open businesses you enter as a visitor. Working businesses that ask for quiet, and every private home, are seen from the public street or not at all.
Flights are not included. Plan to land in Auckland by mid afternoon on day 1 and to fly home from Queenstown after lunch on the last day.
Tour leader, New Zealand
Grew up near Lake Taupo and has lived in Wellington for fifteen years. She spent several winters on the ski patrol on Mount Ruapehu before she started leading small groups, and she still checks the mountain forecast every morning out of habit.
Practical information
Your travel pack, with ticket times and hotel addresses, arrives two weeks before departure. Weather, airports and the best months are on the New Zealand page.
Summer days are 65 to 78 F, but Tongariro can be cold, windy and wet at any time. Bring a waterproof jacket, a warm fleece, a hat and gloves even in January.
The New Zealand sun burns fast, even on cool days. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat with a brim.
Bring broken-in walking shoes or light boots, and clean them well before you pack: customs inspects footwear for soil and seeds, and you must declare all food.
The flight to Queenstown includes one checked bag of up to 23 kg (50 lb). Keep a small day bag for the van.
Cards work almost everywhere, including small cafes. The currency is the New Zealand dollar; a little cash helps at roadside fruit stalls.
Tour FAQ
Yes. The ticket for the Hobbiton Movie Set guided tour is included, with the drink at the Green Dragon Inn. It is the set's own public tour; we book it like any visitor and have no special arrangement.
Not on this tour. Mount Sunday is on the South Island, a long drive inland from Christchurch, and the Edoras set was removed after filming. We chose the Queenstown region instead, where several locations are close together.
Driving and taking the ferry would take two full days. The direct flight takes about an hour and a half, and on a clear day the view over the Southern Alps is a highlight of its own.
If you can walk 4 miles at an easy pace with some uphill, you will be fine. Only the optional Tongariro Alpine Crossing needs real hiking fitness.
Yes. Many travelers add a day trip or a cruise on Milford Sound after the tour, from Queenstown. We can book the extra hotel night and the trip for you.
Kiri swaps the order of the Tongariro walks, or takes the group to the lower forest tracks and the Whakapapa visitor center. Safety on the mountain comes first.
Yes. The group is small and meals are shared. The single supplement is $1,290 for the nine nights.
