Overview

The real streets behind the films

New York is a film set that never closes, and this tour takes you to the corners that matter. You start where Audrey Hepburn ate her breakfast at the Tiffany windows, walk past the Plaza Hotel of Home Alone 2 and North by Northwest, and cross Central Park by way of Wollman Rink, Gapstow Bridge and Bethesda Fountain. You see the Seinfeld diner on upper Broadway and the Temple of Dendur at the Met, where Harry and Sally argued about paprikash.

Then the tour turns downtown and across the river. You take the public NBC Studio Tour at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, eat pastrami at Katz's Delicatessen under the sign that marks Meg Ryan's table, and stand in front of the Ghostbusters firehouse in Tribeca. One morning goes to the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, a museum for anyone who likes to know how pictures are made, and the last afternoon to Dumbo, for the Manhattan Bridge view from Once Upon a Time in America and a walk home over the Brooklyn Bridge.

How active the days are: moderate

Pace 3 of 5. Two full days of 5 to 7 miles on foot on city sidewalks, with stairs at subway stations and an optional 1.3-mile walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. The van covers the long hops, and there are plenty of chances to sit down, but you should be comfortable walking for an hour at a time.

Straight talk about the New York film tour

What the days are really like, so there are no surprises.

  • What can change

Filming, events and closures can move a stop or close an interior on the day. Your leader swaps in another location nearby and tells you why.

  • Inside or outside

Museums, studio tours and open businesses you enter as a visitor. Working businesses that ask for quiet, and every private home, are seen from the public street or not at all.

Practical information

Before you go on the New York film tour

Your travel pack, with ticket times and hotel addresses, arrives two weeks before departure. Weather, airports and the best months are on the New York City page.

  • Weather

April to June and September to October run 55 to 75 F. November is 45 to 55 F, December 35 to 45 F. Pack a layer for the wind off the rivers.

  • Shoes

You walk 5 to 7 miles on the two biggest days, on sidewalks and stairs. Bring broken-in walking shoes, not new ones.

  • Security at 30 Rock

The NBC Studio Tour screens bags like an airport. Leave large bags at the hotel and bring a photo ID.

  • Money

Cards and phone payments work almost everywhere, including the subway gates. Katz's hands you a ticket at the door; do not lose it, they check it on the way out.

  • Your phone

Download the scenes you love before you come. Your leader carries a tablet with every scene, but it is fun to match your own frame.

Tour FAQ

New York film tour: questions and answers

Is the NBC Studio Tour the same as seeing a live show?

No. The studio tour is a guided walk through the building at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, run by NBC for the public, and we book your tickets. Live show tickets are free but given out by lottery and standby lines, which nobody can buy for you.

Do we see the Friends apartment?

We see the building used for the exterior shots, on the corner of Bedford and Grove Streets. The show was filmed in Burbank, California. People live in the building, so we stay on the public corner and keep our voices down.

Can I skip a walk and rest?

Yes. The van is never far away, and your leader can arrange a pickup at the next stop. The hotel is central, so going back for an hour in the afternoon is easy.

Why is there no Statue of Liberty?

It is a half-day trip by ferry with long security lines, and it is not really a film location tour stop. Many travelers add it on the free morning of day 5 or on an extra night; we can book the ferry ticket for you.

Is this tour good for a solo traveler?

Yes. Many of our New York travelers come alone, and the single supplement is $520 for the four nights. Dinners are shared, and your leader is happy to suggest safe evening walks.

What is at the Museum of the Moving Image?

Real cameras, costumes, makeup, puppets from Jim Henson productions, and stations where you can try sound effects and editing yourself. It sits next to Kaufman Astoria Studios, a working film and TV studio that is not open to visitors.
