FAQ

Questions travelers ask before booking

Answers to the questions our travel advisors hear most, grouped by topic: choosing a tour, prices, getting there, life on the tour and the locations themselves.

The Quiraing, Isle of Skye

Choosing a tour

Which tour is best for a first trip?

If you have one favorite story, pick the tour built around it: Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik or Northern Ireland, Harry Potter in Britain, The Sound of Music in Salzburg. For a first trip abroad, Harry Potter Britain and Rome are the easiest, with short drives and English widely spoken. Hollywood on Location covers the studios in five days.

Do I need to have seen the films?

No. Your tour leader shows the scene on a tablet at most stops, so you can compare the frame with the street in front of you. Many travelers come for the places themselves: Dubrovnik, the Icelandic coast or Petra are worth the trip without a single film.

How active are the tours?

Each tour has a pace from 1 to 5. Most are 2 or 3: two to four hours on foot a day, on city sidewalks, park paths and short trails. Days in the van are broken up with stops every hour or so.

Are your tours connected to the studios or the productions?

No. We are an independent tour company. We buy tickets for the public studio tours like any visitor, and every location we visit is a public place: a street, a park, a restaurant, a museum or a landscape.

Do you visit the houses from films and series?

No private homes, ever. The owners of famous houses, from Los Angeles to the villages of England, have asked fans to stay away, and we respect that. Our tour leaders can tell you the story of those houses from somewhere else.

Can I bring children?

Our tours are designed for adults, and travelers under 16 must travel with a parent. Families with younger children usually book a private tour, which can slow the pace and add a pool afternoon.

Prices and payments

What does the price include?

On trips of two days or more: hotels with breakfast, the meals listed, the van and driver, any flights or boats within the tour, studio tour tickets and park entry in the itinerary, airport transfers on the first and last day, and a named tour leader. Day tours include the tickets, the van and the tour leader.

What is not included?

Flights to the start city and home, passports and any visa or travel authorization, travel insurance, meals not listed, drinks and tips for the tour leader, driver and local guides.

How do I pay?

Seats are held free for 72 hours while you decide. A $250 deposit per person then confirms a trip of two days or more, and the balance 60 days before departure. You can pay in parts in between at no fee. Day tours are paid in full when you book.

Is there a single supplement?

Yes on trips of two days or more, shown on each tour page. Some spring departures have none; see the deals page. Day tours have no supplement.

Can you hold seats while I decide?

Yes, for 72 hours without payment. Ask by phone or on the quote form.

Getting there

Do you book flights?

No. You book your own flights to the start city and home, so you can use miles and the airline you like. For Europe most guests fly overnight and land on the morning of day 1. We send the arrival and departure windows that match our airport transfers on the first and last day.

What documents do I need?

A passport valid for at least six months after you travel. Britain and Northern Ireland ask US travelers for an ETA before departure, New Zealand an NZeTA, and Jordan a visa, which the Jordan Pass covers. For the Schengen countries on our list (Croatia, Iceland, Spain, Malta, Italy, Austria and Switzerland) US citizens need no visa for short stays. Rules change, so we send the current ones with your confirmation.

Do I need travel insurance abroad?

We strongly advise it. US health plans and Medicare often pay little or nothing outside the United States, so look for a policy with medical cover and evacuation as well as cancellation.

Can I arrive early or stay longer?

Yes. We add hotel nights before or after the tour, at the group hotel or one you choose, with the airport transfer moved to your day.

Where do day tours start?

At central hotels or a meeting point named on the tour page. Your pickup time is confirmed the evening before.

On the tour

Who leads the group?

A named Scenes Found tour leader who lives in the country travels with the group from the first day to the last. Licensed local guides join at sites that require one, and Bedouin drivers take the jeeps into Wadi Rum.

How do you travel between locations?

In a small coach or 14-seat van with a professional driver, so the tour leader can talk and show clips instead of driving. Some tours add a ferry, a train or a short flight, all included. In London, Rome and New York we also walk and ride the metro.

Can I take photos everywhere?

Outdoors, almost always. Studio tours have their own rules, usually no photos on stages that are in use. Your tour leader tells you before each visit.

What if we run into an active film shoot?

It happens, especially in New York, London, Belfast and Dubrovnik. We watch from where the crew allows, keep quiet during takes and never try to get onto a set. Sometimes it means a stop moves to later in the day.

The locations

Are the locations still recognizable?

Most are. Some storefronts have changed hands and some interiors were built on a stage, which your tour leader will point out. Landscapes like the Icelandic coast, Wadi Rum and the mountains of New Zealand look much as they did on screen.

Do you go inside restaurants and shops from the shows?

Where they are open to the public, yes, as normal customers: we eat at some and buy coffee or a snack at others. We do not ask staff for anything they would not do for any visitor.

Which months are best?

May, June, September and October for most of Europe, with fewer crowds and milder heat than July and August. Iceland and the Alps run in summer, Jordan in spring and fall, and New Zealand from November to April, its summer. Los Angeles works all year.
