Overview

From the Red Keep to the dragon cellars

Game of Thrones filmed in Dubrovnik from its second season, and the Old Town is still King's Landing the moment you walk through the Pile Gate. This tour gives the city three full days. You walk the walls at 8 in the morning before the crowds, climb to the tournament courtyard of Fort Lovrijenac, stand at the top of the Jesuit Staircase where Cersei's walk began, and take the boat to Lokrum, the island that played Qarth. The Stradun, the main street, was also Canto Bight in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

On day 4 the van takes the coast road north, stopping at Trsteno Arboretum, the Red Keep gardens of Olenna Tyrell, and crossing the Pelješac Bridge to Split. Three nights there cover the Roman cellars of Diocletian's Palace, where Daenerys chained her dragons, and Klis Fortress, which stood in for Meereen. Ivana Kovač leads the whole week and carries the scenes on a tablet, so you can compare frame and stone.

How active the days are: moderate

Pace 3 of 5. Dubrovnik and Klis are built on stairs. The city walls circuit is about 1.2 miles with many steps, Fort Lovrijenac is about 200 steps up, and Klis has stony, uneven paths. Most days have 3 to 5 miles on foot, broken up with cafe stops, and you should be happy climbing stairs for 20 minutes at a time.

Moderate, 3 of 5. Dubrovnik and Klis are built on stairs.

  • What can change

Filming, events and closures can move a stop or close an interior on the day. Your leader swaps in another location nearby and tells you why.

  • Inside or outside

Museums, studio tours and open businesses you enter as a visitor. Working businesses that ask for quiet, and every private home, are seen from the public street or not at all.

Your tour leader: Ivana Kovač

Practical information

Before you go on the Dubrovnik Thrones tour

Your travel pack, with ticket times and hotel addresses, arrives two weeks before departure. Weather, airports and the best months are on the Croatia page.

  • Weather

April, May and October run 65 to 75 F, June and September closer to 80 F. Evenings by the sea are cool in spring and fall, so bring a light layer.

  • Shoes

The limestone streets of Dubrovnik are polished smooth and slippery when wet, and there are stairs everywhere. Bring shoes with good grip, not new ones.

  • Dress rules

Dubrovnik fines people walking in the Old Town in swimwear or shirtless. Churches and the cathedral in Split want covered shoulders and knees.

  • Money

Croatia uses the euro. Cards work almost everywhere, but a few euros in coins help for cafes, public restrooms and the occasional church donation box.

  • Arriving early

If you fly in a day early, Dubrovnik is easy on your own; we can book an extra night at the tour hotel.

Tour FAQ

Dubrovnik Thrones tour: questions and answers

Is Dubrovnik too crowded in summer?

The worst hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in July and August. We do not run this tour in those two months, and on every departure we start the walls at 8 a.m. and go to Lokrum while the Old Town is at its busiest.

Do we see the Red Keep?

You see the real parts: the courtyard and terraces of Fort Lovrijenac, and the walls and towers. The tall castle itself was added digitally. Ivana shows you on a tablet which parts of each shot were real.

Is the Iron Throne on Lokrum the one from the show?

It is a throne for photos in the small Game of Thrones exhibit at the monastery, not part of a studio tour. It is fun, and the line is usually short.

Why no Game of Thrones Studio Tour?

That tour is at Linen Mill Studios in Northern Ireland, where the interiors were built. It is on our Northern Ireland tour, which pairs well with this one.

Is this tour good for a solo traveler?

Yes. The group is small, meals are shared, and the single supplement is $690 for six nights.

How long is the drive from Dubrovnik to Split?

About 140 miles, which is 3 hours of driving. With the stops at Trsteno and Ston, the day runs from 9 a.m. to about 5 p.m., and the coast views make it go quickly.
