Overview

Fifty years of 007 in the high Alps

Bond has been coming to the Alps since 1964, and this tour follows him in the order of the map rather than the films. You start in Zurich and ride up to Mürren, a car-free village on a cliff, then take the cable car to Piz Gloria on the Schilthorn, Blofeld's clinic in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The next day crosses the Grimsel and Furka passes, where Sean Connery's Aston Martin chased Goldfinger's Rolls-Royce past the old Hotel Belvedere and the Rhone Glacier.

South of the Alps you stand on the Verzasca Dam, the drop at the start of GoldenEye, and spend a warm evening on Lake Maggiore. Then the road crosses the Engadine into Austria, to Sölden, where the Gaislachkogl cable car climbs to Ice Q and 007 Elements from Spectre. The last stop before Salzburg is Altaussee, the quiet lake where Bond finds Mr. White. Katharina Moser leads the whole trip, and departures run only when every pass and cableway is open.

How active the days are: easy to moderate

Pace 2 of 5. Short walks of 1 to 3 miles on most days, some of them on mountain paths with uneven ground and steps. Two summits at about 9,700 and 10,000 feet, reached by cable car. Two long travel days of five to six hours in the van, with stops.

Before you book

Straight talk about the James Bond Alps tour

What the days are really like, so there are no surprises.

  • Pace and walking

Easy to moderate, 2 of 5. Short walks of 1 to 3 miles on most days, some of them on mountain paths with uneven ground and steps.

  • What can change

Filming, events and closures can move a stop or close an interior on the day. Your leader swaps in another location nearby and tells you why.

  • Inside or outside

Museums, studio tours and open businesses you enter as a visitor. Working businesses that ask for quiet, and every private home, are seen from the public street or not at all.

  • Getting there

Flights are not included. Plan to land in Zurich by mid afternoon on day 1 and to fly home from Salzburg after lunch on the last day.

Your tour leader: Katharina Moser

Tour leader, Salzburg

Born in the Salzkammergut and living in Salzburg since her music studies, she has guided visitors around the city for twelve years. She drives the Alpine passes in her own car on weekends and checks every cableway timetable before a group arrives.

Practical information

Before you go on the James Bond Alps tour

Your travel pack, with ticket times and hotel addresses, arrives two weeks before departure. Weather, airports and the best months are on the Austria and Switzerland page.

  • Weather

Valleys reach 70 to 80 F in July and August, but the summits stay around 40 F and can be windy. Bring a warm layer, a hat and sunglasses, even in midsummer.

  • Altitude

Two summits at about 9,700 and 10,000 feet. Walk slowly on stairs up there and drink water. If you have heart or lung problems, check with your doctor before booking.

  • Luggage

One medium suitcase each, please. Mürren is car-free and our bags go up by cable car; we change hotels five times.

  • Money

Swiss francs in Switzerland and euros in Austria. Cards work almost everywhere; a few francs in coins help for mountain restrooms and coffee.

  • If a pass closes

Summer snow can close a pass for a day. Katharina checks the reports every morning, and the driver takes the nearest tunnel or train shuttle if needed.

Tour FAQ

James Bond Alps tour: questions and answers

Are the cable car tickets included?

Yes: the cableways to Mürren and the Schilthorn, Bond World, the Gaislachkogl cable car and 007 Elements. We buy them as a group; we have no special arrangement with the operators or with the Bond producers.

What if the summit is in cloud?

It happens. Katharina watches the forecast and can swap the summit day with a free morning on either side. Bond World and 007 Elements are indoors, so the visit is worth it even in cloud.

Can I do the GoldenEye bungee jump?

Yes, if you book it yourself with the operator at the dam; jumps run in the warmer months and depend on the weather. We plan enough time at the dam for one jumper; tell us when you book the tour.

Why does the tour not include Goldfinger's Fort Knox or the Spectre scenes in Rome?

They were filmed elsewhere, mostly in the United States and Italy. This tour stays in the Alps, where four Bond films shot their mountain scenes.

Is this tour good for a solo traveler?

Yes. Meals are shared, the group is small, and the single supplement is $1,090 for eight nights.

Can I add the Sound of Music day?

Yes. Add a night in Salzburg and join our Sound of Music day tour, which leaves from the Mirabell Gardens near the tour hotel.
